It's slow, detailed work. There's no shortcut to a good weave, and every ring has to sit exactly where it belongs for the piece to hang and move the way it should. But that patience is exactly what gives chainmail its character. The finished piece has a kind of movement you can't get any other way. It drapes, it flexes, it catches the light differently depending on how you turn your wrist.
I love this technique because it turns something so structured into something so alive. Each piece is made to be worn and moved in, not just looked at.
Chainmail is one of the oldest metalworking techniques still practiced today. It's widely believed to have originated with Celtic tribes in Europe as far back as the 4th century BCE, who linked iron rings into flexible mesh for armor, creating protection that moved with the body instead of restricting it. Maybe it’s just my own Celtic roots that draw me to it. A genetic memory passed down through generations.
